QLX1 portable laser spectrometer

QLX1 portable laser spectrometer

of QuantoLux

Description

Within seconds, the Rigaku KT-100S handheld metal analyzer easily performs identification of the most difficult alloy grades. The KT-100S analyzer utilizes laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) enabling durable and accurate alloy identification for use in:

  • Scrap metal sorting
  • Quality assurance in metal fabrication
  • Positive material identification (PMI) in mission-critical operations, such as aerospace and petrochemical

Features

  • Full Scope Analysis.
  • No or low Argon consumption.
  • Fast results (1-5s).
  • Small size & weight.
  • Ultra-light probe.

Description

QLX1 is a laser spectrometer for many applications in the metal industries. It follows the concept of classical mobile spark spectrometers but features a much lighter and truly portable design. Working with the ultra-light probe is a pleasure, even over many hours.

Typically the instrument is used for metal sorting, positive material identification (PMI) and analysis. Due to its superior analytical performance, QLX1 even covers demanding applications like carbon in low alloy steels to separate L-grades, nitrogen in duplex steels, or the detection of phosphorus and sulfur.

QLX1 is a “lab-to-go” and your best choice when you need proper analyses, identify tricky materials, need rapid results to complete a high number of measurements.

  • Full Scope Analysis.
  • No or low Argon consumption.
  • Fast results (1-5s).
  • Small size & weight.
  • Ultra-light probe.

The Probe – better than handheld

The probe of QLX1 is super light and very handy. It contains a hi-res UV optic with CMOS detector and the laser head.

The LED on top indicates when laser is on or an optional display shows the grade, results, etc.

The opening is just 3 mm and, thus, also suitable for smaller samples, weld seams, etc. Light paths are protected by saphire windows.

The probe is connected to the main unit with a 1.5m hose. The weight of the probe is approximately 840 grams.

Due to the open laser beam, the instrument is classified as 3B. For certain applications the use of safety goggles is recommended.

QLX 4.0 Software

The QLX 4.0 software has an easy-to-use interface and is operated via touch screen. It features work modes for analysis, sorting, and material identification (PMI). The grade library is open and can freely be edited. Colors highlight deviations from grade specs.

Carbon equivalents, the sum of trump elements and other “pseudo element” formula can be created in the settings menu and added to the display.

Results can be saved in an SQL database. Customized reporting via PDF or into Excel is also supported.

QLXUp! is an optional update service that keeps the QLX 4.0 software up to date.

New software version will automatically be downloaded from the QuantoLux server and the user will be notified.

Analytical Performance

QLX1 shares many components with the laboratory version QLX3. High resolution optical systems, a powerful pulsed laser are important pre-requisites for outstanding analytical performance.
Decades of experience in QuantoLux’ application team enable complex analytical solutions and expert calibrations.
The steel calibration is complete with all relevant alloying and trump elements.

QLX1 offers a wide portfolio of calibrations. All metal bases can be covered. And all can be installed on the instrument or added any time later! A real powerful tool – shaping the future of OES!

Currently our focus is on metal applications, but soon non-metal apps will become available.
Please inquire with your analytical needs and we will check for you!

Accessories

The QLX1 offers various options to simplify working with the instrument or make it more comfortable in various situations.

The attachable mini argon container with regulator allows the user to have argon available anywhere it is needed to be able to analyse UV elements in certain applications.

Spare batteries with external charger enable longer operation of the instrument without a power supply in reach. While Li-ion is the lightest option, the alternative AGM battery has lesser restrictions to take on board a flight.

The backpack harness is for easy transport of the instrument on-site. Climbing scaffolding safely is not a problem as both hands are free. Use at high altitudes or inaccessible places is also possible.

The new transport case is water resistant, crushproof and dust resistant and – thus – the perfect container to store and transport your instrument. It has durable, ball-bearing, polyurethane wheels and an extension handle for easy transportation.

More accessories and helpful tools are available for QLX1. Please contact your local sales office to learn more.

Concept & Design

QLX1 follows a unique design concept. It unites the benefits of both worlds, handheld analysers (XRF, LIBS) and mobile spark spectrometers and avoids the pitfalls at the same time.

In detail this means:

full analytical scope! No lock-out elements, no long measurement times.

The system covers all relevant elements and this may even include C, N, P, S and many others (in steels), Li, Be, Mg, Al within 3 seconds at low limits of quantification

truly portable solution! Both battery and argon on board! With less than 8kg and a hands-free backpack set, even analyzing on higher elevations is possible.

big display! A 12″ touch-screen allows easy reading and operation.

high capacity battery! Re-chargeable, light-weight Li-ion battery supports you throughout the day.

The probe is separated from the main unit and weighs just 840 grams. Controllers, battery, and electronics are located in the main unit.

For applications where argon is needed, a special mini can can be attached to the bottom of the instrument. A complete filling lasts for approximately 1000 to 1500 or even more measurements (depending on application). The gas cylinder is refillable.

Latest technologies

QLX1 features latest technologies in excitation, detection and digital concept.

In contrast to classical spark spectrometers, QLX1 uses a laser to excite the sample and generate a plasma. We call this laser-OES, but the technology is also referred to as LIBS.

It offers some distinct advantages:

 small burnspot

 no or low argon

no electrode cleaning, no cross contamination

The detectors used in QLX1 are CMOS sensors. They are technically superior to previously used CCDs in many aspects: spectral response, dynamic range, speed. They allow single-pulse detection, a technology used for micro-analysis, depth profiling, and also to identify outliers and, thus, improve the precision of the instrument.

Finally, various digital services and general IoT functions, provide value propositions unseen in this type of instrument before.
